Triumph Over Adversity: Kho Kho Captain Nasreen Shaikh Receives Arjuna Award
In a momentous occasion for Indian sports, the Kho-Kho Federation of India announces that Nasreen Shaikh, a standout athlete in Kho-Kho, has been awarded the prestigious Arjuna Award by the honorable President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu. This honour is a recognition of her extraordinary journey, characterized by resilience and determination akin to the legendary Arjuna, the award's namesake.
Nasreen’s story is one of overcoming adversity. Raised in Delhi, where her father was a street vendor, she faced significant challenges but never wavered in her commitment to Kho-Kho. This dedication, reminiscent of Arjuna's famed focus, propelled her to lead the Indian team to a gold medal at the South Asian Games despite the turbulent backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sudhanshu Mittal, President of the Kho-Kho Federation of India, comments, "Nasreen Shaikh's journey, marked by humble beginnings and remarkable achievements, embodies the spirit of determination. The Arjuna Award fittingly honors her exceptional dedication to her sport."
During her challenging journey, the Federation provided unwavering support, particularly during the financial difficulties her family faced during the pandemic.
When asked about her future in Kho-Kho, Nasreen expressed her aspiration to see the establishment of a Women's Ultimate Kho-Kho League, inspired by the success of the ongoing men's league. "My dream is to play in a Women's Ultimate Kho-Kho League. The success of the men's league has laid a fantastic foundation, and it's time for women athletes to have the same opportunity," said Nasreen.
Upon receiving the award, Nasreen stated, "This award is a testament to the hard work and resilience required in sports. It's a moment of immense pride for me and a significant recognition for Kho-Kho."
